MP3: Gonjasufi – “Ancestors”

Gonjasufi
If you still haven’t heard Gonjasufi‘s debut album, ‘A Sufi and A Killer’, you ought to reprioritise your affairs. Already being gushed over by music aficionados/geeks the world over, it towers over much of the year’s competition like some ancient Egyptian deity. Rather than the head of a falcon and the body of a man, however, it’s a creature built from smoked-out hip-hop, glitchy beats, hallucinogenic folk, freaky psychedelia and crackling nostalgia.

It’s so bizarrely beautiful, it’s bewildering, and when you look at who’s behind the album, it’s obvious why. Gonjasufi is the newest project from L.A’s Sumach Ecks. A rapper, singer, DJ and yoga instructor, Ecks has sourced beats from electronic visionaries including Flying Lotus and The Gaslamp Killer, and blessed each track with his distinctively spaced-out vocals.

If you want to get deep into the background, Pitchfork did an incredible interview with him in February. Otherwise, simply dive into free mp3 “Ancestors” and be ready for a spiritual experience.

‘A Sufi and A Killer’ is out now on Warp through Inertia.
