MP3: GAYNGS – “The Gaudy Side Of Town”

GAYNGS
When a so-called “indie” supergroup lists both 10cc and Bone Thugs N Harmony as prime influences, that’s always gonna be a good thing. I mean, how many bands out there know how to blend the almighty 80s powerballad with buttery 90s R&B?

If your answer was “none”, then you are dead wrong. 25-piece collective, GAYNGS, have found the musical “crossroads” so to speak (no Bone Thugs pun intended) and walk all up and down it on their debut album, ‘Relayted’.

And that “25-piece” business wasn’t a typo. GAYNGS is an enormous project, including founder/mastermind Ryan Olson, and members of Solid Gold, The Rosebuds, Megafaun, and Bon Iver (including Mr. “Skinny Love” himself, Justin Vernon).

For a taste of what GAYNGS are about, check out the sexy, candlelit groove of album opener, “The Gaudy Side Of Town”. It’s the kinda beat that Nate Dogg woulda thrown on the stereo, when he’d bring “ho’s” back to his “pad” in ’94.

But these guys also know how to do soft rock, like it was karaoke night in the Gibb household. Just check their cover of Godley & Creme’s 80s smash, “Cry”. If you like, you can download the whole clip from our pals at Jagjaguwar.
