Video: City Of L.A. Declares 23rd April “Ozomatli Day”
Unless you’re Jesus, it’s pretty rare to have a whole day named after you. That’s unless you’re hip-hop/world/salsa fusion extraordinaires, Ozomatli, of course.
The seven piece – who recently completed an outstanding tour of Australia – have had their fifteenth year recognised by the City of Los Angeles, with Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa officially naming April 23rd 2010, “Ozomatli Day”. Head below for video of the ceremony, and a performance.
This event followed another recent honour, when Ozomatli played for President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama at the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute’s 32nd Annual Award Gala, held in Washington DC.
Ozomatli’s latest album, ‘Fire Away’, is a collision of hip hop and salsa, dancehall and cumbia, samba and funk, merengue and comparsa, East LA R&B and New Orleans second line, Jamaican ragga and Indian raga. Like their Grammy Award-winning output in years past, it follows a key mantra… it will take you around the world by taking you around the city of Los Angeles.
