MP3: Lior – “Tumbling Into The Dawn”

Lior
He’s topped the pop charts a couple of times. He’s played the Opera House. He commands an army of fans big enough to overpower a small pacific nation (lookin’ at you, New Zealand). But Lior knows a thing or two about “keepin’ it real”/indie.

His forthcoming album, ‘Tumbling Into The Dawn’, continues the unlikely success story that began in 2005, when his first album (‘Autumn Flow’) became one of the most successful independently released debuts ever. It’s got all the hallmarks that’ve made Lior such a favourite: the evocative lyrics, the intricate arrangements, those unforgettable melodies.

But he’s grown as a songwriter too and, on this free mp3 of the album’s title track, that shines through. I mean, on the face of things, this is a song about botched suicide. It details a famous incident where a cliff-jumper survives his fateful fall and is carried out to sea by the wind, only to find himself struggling to survive the waves moments later.

Bleak stuff on the surface, sure. But for Lior it’s a bittersweet parable about renewal and possibilities. Most definitely the sweetest song about suicide since the M*A*S*H theme.

I went to Lior’s Newcastle Lizotte’s November 2010 gig and he spoke about this song, and then played it wonderfully with his band. A week later at home in Coonabarabran, in a cafe I saw Jonathan Zinn who co-wrote this song and played in Lior’s band at the Lizotte’s gig – extremely random meeting! Anyway, I introduced myself, said how great the gig was, and Jon graciously sat with me over a coffee for twenty minutes talking about the crafting and writing of Tumbling into the Dawn – one of the highlight songs of the CD, I think. Parts of the song where inspired by Bowie’s Space Oddity – especially the quiet, single note bars prior to the bridge – who’d a picked that connection? For such a seamless-sounding song it apparently took a lot of crafting and trying different musical ideas before the final shape was settled. Lior: hugely under-rated! How do much less talented and skilled musicians gain celebrity? The media is the cause of many sad distortions in our culture.
