News: Bon Iver Slow Jamz with Kanye West on New Tracks!

Bon IverBon Iver frontman, Justin Vernon (pictured), spent time recording with Kanye West earlier this year, laying vocals for “at least 10 songs” while the pair were in Hawaii.

While there’s no guarantee that the tracks will make Kanye’s forthcoming album (due November), the pair’s “Lost in the World” collaboration seems a firm favourite for the final cut. The song allegedly features a sample from Bon Iver’s “Woods”, taken from 2009′s ‘Blood Bank’ EP. It also features newly recorded vocals by Vernon, and is heavily rumoured to be Kanye’s next single.

According to Rolling Stone, it was Ed Banger Records boss Pedro Winter who first planned to sample “Woods”. But upon being played the track, Kanye asked to use it instead. Kanye said: “I called [Vernon] and we ended up becoming like really good friends, playing basketball together everyday, and going into the back studio and just record his parts. He’s similar to me, like where he just does shit just so people would be like, ‘Oh shit how did you do that? How did that happen?’ He’s just a really cool guy to be around.”

In an exclusive Pitchfork interview, Vernon recounts:  “I was in New York in January and I got a call from my manager and he said Kanye West wanted to maybe use “Woods” as a sample.” I was like, “Yes.” A week later there were more murmurings and eventually I just got on the phone with Kanye. We ended up talking for a half hour about music and how we were fans of each other and Avatar. It was a really pleasant, easy-going conversation between two people that are pretty psyched about music. He was like, “I like how you sing so fearlessly. You don’t care how your voice sounds. It’d be awesome if you could come out to Hawaii and hear the track, and there’s some other shit I think we could throw down on.” I was just like, “Yeah, cool man!” I surprised myself by not being nervous or apprehensive. I said, “When should I come out?’ And he was like, “How about tomorrow?”

“We were just eating breakfast and listening to it and Kanye’s like, ‘Fuck, this is going to be the festival closer.’ I was like, ‘Yeah, cool.’ It kind of freaked me out.” Along with West, Vernon met and worked with Nicki Minaj, John Legend, and Rick Ross while in Hawaii. He said, “I was literally in the back room rolling a spliff with Rick Ross talking about what to do on the next part of a song. It was astonishing.”

In the expansive interview, he delves deeper into his Kanye collaborations, as well as touches on his new supergroup GAYNGS, and the next Bon Iver album! For a full transcript of the interview, simply CLICK HERE.
