MP3: Abe Vigoda – “To Tears”

Abe Vigoda
The words “tropical punk” got bandied around alot when L.A’s Abe Vigoda released their criminally-underrated debut back in 2008. It was frenticly-paced, lusciously atmospheric and uttery sublime, but never managed to push the four-piece into mass consciousness in a year when Vampire Weekend dominated.

Hearing “To Tears” - the latest track to emerge from the band’s forthcoming album, ‘Crush’ - you get the feeling that all that’s about to change. Utilising darker post-punk elements, the track is almost a complete departure from the glare and warmth of their debut. But it also presents a deeper, more compelling sound. With its spiralling synths, sullen vocals, and tumultuous shifts in direction – it creates a mood of exhilarating abandon.
