MP3: Swans – “Eden Prison”

frontman, Michael Gera, set it straight in a statement earlier this year: “This is not a reunion. It’s not some dumb-ass nostalgia act. It is not repeating the past.”

Damn right it isn’t. Although formed in 1982, Swans aren’t releasing their first album in thirteen years so they can reminisce about good times past and make a zillion bucks on the Fleetwood Mac circuit. Swans are, and always were, about the future.

Having arisen from New York’s underground art and post-punk scenes in the eighties, these guys have influenced so many artists that their impact is unquantifiable. Their dark, deafening, and dingey material spearheaded no wave. Their more epic and ambient textures precursed post-rock.

New album, ‘My Father Will Guide Me Up a Rope to the Sky’, constitutes the collective’s first work after a long hiatus, but it’s just as immediate and forward-thinking as ever. This free mp3 of “Eden Prison” is loud, bleak and lyrically neurotic. Grab it below and feel the raw impact.
