MP3: Darwin Deez – ‘Wonky Beats’ Mixtape

Darwin Deez / Willy Wonka

Who can take a sun rise? Sprinkle it with dew? Cover it with chocolate and a miracle or two? Well, apparently, Darwin Deez can.

Having owned 2010 with a handful of infectious hits and a mind-blowing set at Parklife, Darwin has decided to drop his first bombshell of 2011: a full length rap mixtape created entirely from samples from the 1971 surrealist children’s classic, ‘Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory’, featuring KOOL AD (aka. Victor Vazquez from Das Racist) and Dev Hynes. Yeah, you heard right.

Described by Darwin himself as “like the Grey album but with Chocolate”, the self-imposed limitation to Willy Wonka samples acted as a source of inspiration. “Limitations give me the freedom to feel ok about whatever comes out because I can always blame the limitations.  But the secret is to get the faucet running in the first place.  Otherwise I am just too serious and too scared to write anything.”

As for his choice of source material: “I just always loved the songs.  Really special melodies (cheer up charlie) and chords (pure imagination).  Thought they’d make good hip hop choruses.” Not much we can really add to this, folks. You just gotta hear it.

In the meantime, here’s a sweet, sugary, tooth-rotting taste of what you can expect.
