Split: The White Stripes offically call it quits
The White Stripes have announced that they have split up. In a statement posted on their website, Meg and Jack White said that the band “has officially ended and will make no further new recordings or perform live”.
This ends four years of speculation about the band’s future. In 2007, the White Stripes cut short their tour promoting ‘Icky Thump’ as drummer Meg was suffering from anxiety, but yesterday’s statement said “both Meg and Jack are feeling fine and in good health” and that the split was “not due to artistic differences or lack of wanting to continue”.
The couple, who initially posed as brother and sister, were married then divorced and now their creative partenrship is also at an end. Their final message fans was that “The White Stripes do not belong to Meg and Jack anymore. The White Stripes belong to you now and you can do with it whatever you want. The beauty of art and music is that it can last forever if people want it to. Thank you for sharing this experience. Your involvement will never be lost on us and we are truly grateful.”
