MP3: The Antlers – “Every Night My Teeth Are Falling Out”
Look over the catalogue of any great band and there’s usually one record that truly breaks the mould and marks their ascension as an act to be reckoned with. It’s a line that separates enjoyable bands from the extraordinary ones. And many never cross it.
The National had it with ‘Alligator’, Animal Collective had it with ‘Feels’, Sufjan Stevens had it with ‘Michigan’. And as brilliant as 2009′s ‘Hospice’ was, The Antlers have truly entered another league with their fourth full-length, ‘Burst Apart’ – out 20th May on Pod.
It’s emotionally stirring yet avoids every cheap cliché. It’s introspective yet outward-looking. It’s ethereal and corporeal all at once. And best of all, Peter Silberman’s vocals enter a haunting new terrain. There’s echoes of Jeff Buckley in his free-floating, gravity-defying falsetto. If there’s any space between the guy’s voice and the deepest realms of his spirit, you wouldn’t know it.
Just check out The Antlers’ new track, “Every Night My Teeth Are Falling Out”, which their pals in The National shared on their Facebook and Twitter late last week. If you’re not hypnotised then you may need to get your soul checked.
You can also stream the band’s taut teaser single, “Parenthesis”.
