MP3: John Maus – “Believer”

John Maus

For better or worse, the career of John Maus has most often been measured against the giant footsteps of longtime friend, collaborator and lo-fi kindred spirit, Ariel Pink. So when the latter released his 2010 modern-masterpiece, ‘Before Today’ (boasting arguably the year’s best single), it seemed only appropriate that Maus should follow with a pop album comparably gargantuan.

New album, ‘We Must Become the Pitiless Censors of Ourselves’, is just that. Decked out in 80s synths, punk scuzz and Top 40 flamboyancy, the record is nothing short of a fantastic, starry-eyed spectacle.

The record’s closing track, “Believer”, is the kind of sparkling, echo-encased showstopper that has lovers embrace and credits roll in the flickering darkness. This is what happens when punk goes Hollywood.
