News: AIR Indie Music Awards nominees announced!

Big ScaryThe nominees for the 2011 Jagermeister Independent Music Awards have been announced. They include eclectic indie duo Big Scary (pictured), alt-pop prodigies Oscar & Martin, emcee Joelistics, Sietta and electronic act Collarbones.

Both Big Scary and Oscar & Martin were nominated for Breakthrough Independent Artist  of the Year. Big Scary, comprised of the boy strummer and girl drummer – Tom Iansek and Jo Syme – will release their debut album ‘Vacation’, this October on their newly formed label, Pieater. Oscar & Martin’s ‘For You’ came out earlier this year on Two Bright Lakes, showcasing the Melbourne pair’s wonky pop sound.

Elefant Traks artists Joelistics and Sietta both picked up nominations for Best Independent Hip-Hop Album.  After TZU decided to take a hiatus, emcee Joelistics released his solo project, ‘Voyager’, an album he describes as the ‘come down record of my late twenties’. Darwin-based duo Sietta earn their nomination with their debut, ‘The Seventh Passenger’, a peerless album of electronic soul, drenched in blues and hip-hop.

Sydney act Collarbones’ single “Don Juan” was nominated for Best Independent Dance / Electronica or Club Single. The experimental electronic duo of Travis Cook (Cyst Impaled) and Marcus Whale (Scissor Lock) have become a mainstay of sorts amongst the DIY set – jamming in warehouses, pubs, galleries and other miscellaneous ad hoc spaces.
