MP3: Smith Westerns – 3am Spiritual
Young Chicago ’70s rock revivalists Smith Westerns are back next month with Soft Will, the Chris Coady-produced followup to their hailed breakthrough Dye It Blonde. “Soft” is an operative word, it seems: Based on lead single “Varsity” and today’s listen “3AM Spiritual,” the band’s retained their prodigal ability to craft carefree, swooning hooks that feel vital and vibrant despite their clear debt to dustier decades, though the new stuff has a little less glam and a lighter, more effervescent touch to it. “3AM Spiritual” lays on a little Floyd-styled-psychedelia in the come-on to the bridge, too, which is a nice fit.
Perhaps best described by RCRD LBL as their RCRD of The Week. “Hit that third record and it’s time to go mature. It’s one of the oldest tricks in the rock LP handbook, but Smith Westerns pull it off with poise, impeccable production and some of the most timeless-sounding summer songs I’ve heard in awhile on Soft Will. “3am Spiritual” is your example – flighty, dreamy, anthemic and rippling with just enough ’70s-aping guitar leads to encourage a Sunday where kissing is the only thing on the agenda.”
The forthcoming Smith Westerns album ‘Soft Will’ is out June 25th on Pod
