Axes
Too Pure
INDIE
ELECTRELANE are an allgirl band from Brighton UK. \'Axes\' is their thirdalbum and was recorded at STEVE ALBINI\'s Chicago studio. Electrelane have never been a band to succumb to stereotypes, preferring instead to twist, break and turn upside down all expectations with every move. It\'s what makes them such an interesting, diverse and continually prolific force. \'Axes\' draws on elements of Electrelane\'s previous albums \'Rock It To The Moon\' and \'The Power Out\' (PURE142CD) but develops them further. The result is their most assured work to date. \'Axes\' is luscious, beautiful and melodic. In parts leaning towards a pop aesthetic complemented by VERITY\'s inscrutable and dulcet vocals. At other times a thunderous powerful force of hardedged metal derived guitar riffs, clattering piano and primal pounding drums and bass. It\'s an engulfing frenzy of garage and new waveesque rock, which intensifies on their cover of LEONARD COHEN\'s \"The Partisan\". The album, which combines JOHN COLTRANE inspired jazz, a deep love of Eastern European Klezmer music, emotive piano music, a male choir and hardcore drone, is a beautiful, courageous and emotionally literate snapshot of a band in impressive control of their sound. This is, without doubt, their best album yet. UNCUT \"The minimalist grooves grow ever tighter\"... MOJO \"An arresting cocktail of postpunk angularity and instinctive pop savy\".
