SOUL/FUNK
A boundarybreaking, soul vocalist beyond your wildest expectations
British vocalist JAMIE LIDELL is set to affirm his musical ascendancy with his incredible new album Multiply. A peerless vocal performer; his largely improvised shows have won him thousands of fans. Reviewers gush with every stroke of a pen. Jamie Lidell is British musics best kept secret, about to be unleashed with this superb record.
Some may know Lidell from his previous work in SUPER_COLLIDER, the tricksy technofunk outfit he helmed with CRISTIAN VOGEL. A good few will recall his smokey crooner vocals on MATTHEW HERBERT's Big Band project, where he took centre stage with the Big Band supporting BJORK. And hardy warehouse rave survivors will have happy memories of his role in underground techno assaults in London.
Highlights include the shimmering 80s synth post disco popdervish that is "When I Come Back Around", the simmering, pulsing sexual R & B energy of "A Little Bit More", the beatific early MOTOWN blast of "Music Will not Last", and the wonderful "Game for Fools", a beautifully melancholic ballad that stands confidently between SAM COOKE and AL GREEN, but the delivery is all Lidell.
Multiply is a pantheon to soul music, a panoply of melodic styles sparkling with soulful motifs. Assimilating tender ballads, funk, and dripping with honeyed streetcorner harmonies, Multiply sees Lidell deftly delve into the past and forge something fresh and uplifting. DAILY TELEGRAPH Blessed with a sweetly classic R&B voice, and a passion for improvising with technology like a 21st century reincarnation of Little Richard THE WIRE A wonder to behold. He possesses a soul voice fried in honey like Sly Stone or Prince, and a beatboxing talent to make Muhammad Ali quake in his Everlast SUNDAY TELEGRAPH If Jamie Cullum is the Roy Castle of postmodern showmanship, Lidells the Jimi Hendrix
