Untouchable Sound - Live
Sea Note
INDIE
- Before there was WEIRD WAR and after NATION OF ULYSSES, there was the mighty
MAKE UP! The Washington D.C. quintet of IAN SVENONIUS, MICHELLE MAE, JAMES
CANTY, STEVE GAMBOA, ALEX MINOFF shook the foundations of a self-important
US rock underground with their infectious mod-soul-garage-punk-rama-lama. All
the while sticking it to 'the man' with a wry sense of humour rather than drab
slogans & predictable posturing. Add to that a sharp "ace face" mod
inspired dress sense & you have one legendary band.
- Their two studio albums, 'After Dark' (DIS105CD) and 'In Mass Mind'
(DIS113CD) on DISCHORD brought a fervour and fever not felt in rock since
the days of the band's heroes the MC5 and LOVE. Many still talk about the
shows from on Australian tour in the 1999 as being some of the best rock
n' roll gigs ever seen here. That's right - ever!
- DRAG CITY offshoot SEA NOTE have now dug out an amazing show from
2000 at The Black Cat Club in DC, recorded by FUGAZI drummer BRENDAN CANTY
(also brother of MAKE UP guitarist, James). Hear IAN SVENONIUS testify to
a home crowd that want to hear the truth! Part JAMES BROWN, part IGGY POP,
part Baptist preacher, part left-wing agitator, part prankster, THE MAKE
UP truly shone live, 'Untouchable Sound - Live!' proves that !.
- This release is also a timely primer for the forthcoming Oz tour by
WEIRD WAR.
