EXTRA GOLDEN is an international collaboration between members of
two bands: OTIENO JAGWASI and ONYANGO WUOD OMARI of the Nairobi, Kenya-based
Benga Band Orchestra: EXTRA SOLAR AFRICA, and IAN EAGLESON and ALEX MINOFF
of the Washington D.C.-based rock band GOLDEN. The musicians met as a result
of Ian's doctoral research on Kenyan music.
Sadly, this will probably be the only release for EXTRA GOLDEN: OTIENO
JAGWASI passed away in May of 2005 due to liver failure.
The result is a unique-sounding record that arose from the cooperation
between musicians that come from different circumstances, but have something
in common: they play in electric guitar bands and perform in bars and nightclubs.
'Ok-Oyot System' was recorded (for the most part) in a single afternoon
at a nightclub in Nairobi and released in 2006.
Onyango is the son of Benga guitarist OMARI NYAKWAR DUKA and is a
highly requested session drummer in Nairobi.
ALLMUSIC.COM (((( "It's too bad more cross-cultural collaborations don't
come off as naturally as this... Ok-Oyot System is an excellent album that
will serve as a tribute to Otieno Jagwasi's memory."
