Little By Little...
Kill Rock Stars
INDIE
'Little By Little' is the third LP from Seattle band HARVEY DANGER. Produced by JOHN GOODMANSON and STEVE FISK, whose credits include NIRVANA, LOW, FISK, SLEATER KINNEY, SCREAMING TREES and BLONDE REDHEAD.
Harvey Danger began working on new material in early 2004, after a three year hiatus, and their new material is stylistically different from the alt garage rock sound of their first two records. 'Little By Little' is mellower, more melodically adventurous, revelling in a classic pop sensibility that owes everything to the bands evolving musical interests.
The biggest change is the dominance of piano throughout, a fitting development as guitarist/pianist JEFF LIN has been classically trained on the instrument.
Songs like "Wine, Women and Song," and "Little Round Mirrors" define the bands' confident new direction, while "Cream and Bastards Rise" and "Cool James" show that they can still make a catchy indie tune when the mood strikes. Other tracks on the album, like the haunting finale "Diminishing Returns" are less classifiable, with near-jazz and anthemic balladry influences.
It may be tempting to read 'Little By Little' as the culmination of a ten year career, but however you choose to perceive it, it's safe to say that this album represents a singular musical voice, and that Harvey Danger is firing on all pistons.
For sound comparisons think BEN FOLDS FIVE, BEN KWELLER or A.C. NEWMAN.
