The WARP label is the midst of a renaissance right now, with recent top selling and critically lauded albums from recent signings GRIZZLY BEAR, MAXIMO PARK, BATTLES and from more established Warp acts like NIGHTMARES ON WAX & SQUAREPUSHER. The 'Warp sound' is no longer so easy to define.
An album that the label itself are very excited about is the new album 'Body Riddle' by CLARK (formerly known as CHRIS CLARK). It's a definite progression from his two previous albums on Warp ('Clarence Park' WARPCD86 & 'Empty The Bones Of You' WARPCD107) It's 'electronica' in the vein that Warp helped define, but it's also so much more. He has managed to gracefully meld together a live rhythmic intensity with the sonic freedom of modern laptop electronics to create something new yet recognizable for fans of all ambitious music.
By hijacking the conventional live instrumentation of rock, draping it in the cloak of electronic composition and running it through the kaleidoscopic filters of krautrock, sunburnt psychedelia and musique concrete Clark has created a force to be reckoned with.
While this will appeal to fans of APHEX TWIN & SQUAREPUSHER & CARIBOU it also helps realise the potential of electronica: to be all kinds of music at once.
Clark has been putting on some reportedly amazing live UK shows with TORTOISE.
