Brightblack Morning Light
Matador
INDIE
They are BRIGHTBLACK MORNING LIGHT and are backed by a crack ensemble, the duo of NATHAN 'Nabob' SHINEYWATER and RACHAEL 'Rabob' HUGHES create transcendent, super-spooky music, a genre-blurring experience: haunting, ethereal and oozing with soul.
They first emerged in 2002 with a PALACE RECORDS split 7" with BONNIE PRINCE BILLY under the name RAINYWOOD. Bonnie Prince Billy remains a key supporter taking them out on tour with him. They have also performed with WHITE MAGIC, PAPA M, JOANNA NEWSOM, VETIVER and recently made their UK debut at the Slint-curated ALL TOMORROW'S PARTIES.
Stoned immaculate...You'll hear many smoky echoes in this album... TRAFFIC on the nod... JOHN MARTYN and NICK DRAKE late at night... RY COODER in the swamplands... MY BLOODY VALENTINE levitating...LOW down on the bayou...TONY JOE WHITE 'getting real mellow' (wink, wink), and THE ROLLING STONES at their most opiated... but you will have never heard anything quite like it.
MOJO (4 stars) "Narcotic slo-mo hippy blues... a hazy treat conjuring mantras from melting Rhodes piano, sweltering slide guitar and a lulling teem of harmonies and percussion. NEW YORK TIMES "The mesmerizing, hollowed-out grooves let you hear almost whatever you want: old soul records, the spaced-out 1990's band Mazzy Star, ambient mood music, the blues"
