Reykjavik, Iceland has produced some pretty amazing artists and unique sounds in the last few decades, not the least include BJORK, MUM and SIGUR ROS. So it’s hardly surprising that yet another group have blessed us with more original aural beauty.
AMIINA are the string section from Iceland’s Sigur Ros, they are also Icelandic. They are a classically trained 4 piece that have been together since the late 1990’s.
They play various string based instruments as well as hand made instruments they have collected on their travels around the world. From their love for found sounds & experimentation they create beautiful sweeping layered soundscapes, which, combined with their classical training comes a river of chiming crystal ‘glass-o-phones’ and bowed saws beneath a new found magic with the addition of vocals (from all four girls) in the mix.
The strings for which they were first recognised form only a small part of their musical arsenal, which now includes everything from bowed saw to glockenspiel to keyboards to wine glasses. The resulting music shimmers and swoons, tugging at the heartstrings and occasionally moistening the tear ducts.
They’ve toured Australia twice, both as themselves (Amiina), opening for Sigur Ros’s two National tours & then remaining on stage as Sigur Ros’s string section. They will return as Amiina later in 2007 covering both National gigs & as part of Festivals supporting this fantastic albums release
Their debut 4 track EP (‘AnimaminA’) was released in 2005 selling over 3000 copies with absolutely no direct marketing or advertising.
