’Ma Fleur’ is the first full studio album by Jason Swinscoe’s ensemble since 2002’s ‘Everyday’ (which sold more than 100,000 worldwide). The record was written as the soundtrack to an imagined film and he collaborated on themes for this album with two writers and each scene represents a story of a different time in life, expressing the emotions which underpin the journey from birth to death.
Swinscoe, now based in New York, then filled out the arrangements with the band and then recruited suitable vocalists. FONTELLA BASS, the woman behind the legendary soul number “Rescue Me”, had worked on ‘Everyday’ and was an obvious choice to voice the parts of the elderly protagonist. Mercury-nominated LOU RHODES (formerly of LAMB) is not only a fantastic singer but is a young mother, and so was perfect for the “mid-life” singer. The as-yet unheralded PATRICK WATSON (who is starting to get constant comparisons to ANTONY & JEFF BUCKLEY), a remarkable vocalist from Montreal, became the youngest of the trio. Renowned New York photographer MAYA HAYUK was commissioned to take 11 pictures to represent each of the scenes and these make up the plates that make up the ltd ed deluxe CD & LP, both within a beautiful hard back case.
