Many people think that the story of recorded music in Jamaica began in the late 50s with the advent of Ska. In fact there had been a flourishing Jamaican music business prior to this that began in the late 1940s.
Like much of Jamaican music that was to follow, Mento was a melting pot of styles and influences. The bedrock of the music was African but there were influences from other parts of the Caribbean as well as Europe and the USA.
PRESSURE SOUNDS has gathered 24 tunes that were produced by the 3 main players in Jamaican Mento music. The MOTTA and KHOURI families as well as Producer IVAN CHIN.
This album documents the Mento recordings made in Jamaica in the 50s which represent the beginnings of a musical phenomenon which would eventually reach all around the world
