For ‘Spider Smile’ Berlin legends, TARWATER have refined their process almost to the point of crafting pop songs. Their songs here are full of allusions and references that encourage the listener to link his/her own stories, memories and dreams with the framework they’ve created.
The recording studio still is BERND JESTRAM’s and RONALD LIPPOK’s favourite instrument. Nonetheless, for ‘Spider Smile’ a number of analogue instruments landed up in front of the microphones .
A harmonica, for example. And with it comes the blues. Guitars send several songs on their way, violins are plucked distinctly in other songs and moods, an oboe spreads melancholy patterns throughout. There is however the playing with repetition & modification, song+soundwriting with clever & seductive modulation – a central motif within the music of Tarwater .
