DISTRICT 6 is the new label from the people who previously brought you ETHER RECORDS – home of the great GILLES PETERSON and the ‘In/Back In series’.
District 6 will kick off and continue where Ether left off, within a remit of producing exciting, funky, cutting edge releases from the genres and sub-genres of jazz, dance, world and soul.
The first of these releases is the start of what promises to be an exciting new series of compilations called “In The Mind Of”. Each album in the series will be a collection of tracks that have influenced and inspired a well-known artist, band or producer while also including exclusive tracks written specifically for the project (by the artist) within the “In the mind of” theme, creating a unique and fascinating soundscape.
The first release in this series is ‘In The Mind Of…NITIN SAWHNEY’. Nitin is widely regarded as one of the most influential and versatile creative talents alive today.
An acclaimed flamenco guitarist and classical/jazz pianist, Sawhney has released six studio albums – each one garnering critical acclaim. He has won a prestigious Mercury Prize Nomination as well as a Mobo Award and BBC Radio 3 Music Award and worked with the likes of TERRY CALLIER, AQUALUNG, MASSIVE ATTACK and 4 HERO.
NITIN SAWHNEY It's all about flow. Whatever I'm doing - scoring for orchestra, a film, making an album, playing a gig or spinning tracks in some dark East London club - there's always been a journey. Sometimes when you just fall inside yourself and the music's all you hear, you feel connected - like you're inside that flow and there's nothing else. You're just drifting. Some songs feel like they were always waiting to be heard - Brown Sugar, Biscuits, Mustt Mustt, Teardrop - In India they say a melody, a classical raga, is in the air around you - that you're just a medium for the raga to manifest itself, that there is no performance. The purity of creation is discovery. These songs work in that same way - interwoven into the fabric of time.. A great song is always relevant, impervious to the fickle ebb and flow of fashion. This is 2007. Timeless.
