Good things come to those who wait. In the case of Melbourne band The Roys, the journey has been as long as it promises to be fruitful. Formed by four friends with a common interest in the persuasive art of hook laden and country tinged rock’n’roll, The Roys started off as a party band with a difference – the difference being that they could actually play, and write damn good songs.
Produced by Pete Luscombe [of Paul Kelly, SBS TV’s Rockwiz houseband fame just to name a few of his illustrious credits], it shows a band equally comfortable in the dusty plains of Neil Young and the southern pop landscape of Big Star.
The first single lifted from the album, “Sexy Man”, bristles with tongue-in-cheek machismo, while the follow-up single, “Body Double”, sees the Roys channelling Mark Bolan in the Navaho Desert. As well as Bolan think late 60s/early 70s Rolling Stones and The Byrds.
In a world plagued with pretension and artistic self-indulgence, it’s a pleasure to see and hear a band making music for pure love and enjoyment.
