The Pirates Gospel
Rogue Records
FOLK
Rogue Records is honoured to present the debut release from Portland, Oregon singer and songwriter Alela Diane. ‘The Pirate's Gospel’ is a powerful document of personal re-evaluation and renewal set against a warm backdrop of intimate songs about family, nature, birth, and generations passed and present. Make way for this beautiful raconteur.
Hailing from the deep woods and winding rivers of Northern California, Alela Diane writes gentle hymns of robust character. Frustrated with her surrounding environment and a turbulent sequence of events (including her parents divorce), Alela sought refuge in song writing. She returned to her hometown and decided to record a personal chronicle of introspection and sentiment. Never would she have predicted that her personal musings would leave journalists, radio presenters and bloggers awestruck.
Originally pressed on humble CDR, and distributed amongst friends in handcrafted packaging, 'The Pirate's Gospel' became a word-of-mouth sensation. Soon enough, Alela's arresting ballads were earning praise, not only from critics at the New York Times and Pitchfork, but also from fellow musicians such as Joanna Newsom, Will Oldham (Bonnie "Prince" Billy), Colin Meloy (The Decemberists), and Chris Walla (Death Cab For Cutie), all of whom have professed themselves to be avid fans!
The exercise of making this album was a purely organic one and as a result there's an unrivalled purity and charm in this record that makes it an instantly tangible and personal experience.
