While The FFs have a reputation for occasionally being “challenging”, this album is their most accessible to date, it’s their most consistently pop and song-oriented yet, recalling the strongest elements of ‘Gallowsbirds Bark’ & ‘Bitter Tea’.
Musically, it’s a wonderful melange of KING CRIMSON, PAUL MCCARTNEY, LED ZEPPELIN, VAN MORRISON, GENTLE GIANT and IKE & TINA. There’s big guitar riffs, huge melodies, a storm of Chamberlin, and some incredible – and incredibly diverse – songs…
Lyrically, it’s simply amazing… across an exotic Egyptian backdrop, a whirlwind of characters including Navajo basketball coaches, a Navy nurse, a jilted ex-Guru, and a mysterious half-Samoan girl from Darwin journey through a wedding, a divorce, a murder, a court-case, and a funeral (and not strictly in that order)… it’s like an Agatha Christie novel on Acid… and that’s not to speak of the new school bus assistant who caused several children to fall into an air-conditioning induced trance!
It was recorded by Bill Skibbe (who has engineered nearly all past albums), & mixed by wonder knob twiddler John McEntire (Tortoise, Sea & Cake).
Longtime Listener edition includes an exclusive/unreleased Bonus Track, “Barnabus And Paul”, and it’s a killer tune too!
