JOHN VANDERSLICE

Emerald City
Longtime Listener
INDIE

John Vanderslice is one of America’s most important artists, a “songwriter’s songwriter” loved by contemporaries Bright Eyes, Spoon and Death Cab For Cutie.
‘Emerald City’ is Vanderslice’s 6th album for Barsuk (Rilo Kiley, Death Cab For Cutie, Nada Surf, Jesse Sykes). The record’s title refers to the green zone in Baghdad.
The songs and themes are fuelled by an era of deep insecurity and paranoia; he has become known for his chameleonic ability to inhabit other, often morally ambiguous, characters – internet paedophiles, Guantanamo guards, serial killers, and Vietnam vets.

John previously toured Australia at the end of 2006 as a special guest of great US indie-folk act The Mountain Goats.

But far from heavy, the songs are always delicate, meticulously arranged, and sweetly sung, Vanderslice’s voice a hopeful tone against tragic tales. It’s an album filled with love songs – confused and angry, afraid and defeated.

Vanderslice owns the legendary Tiny Telephone studio, where he makes his records, as well as those of Spoon, Mates of State, Mountain Goats, Erase Errata and others.
Loved by the press? You bet he is !!  Esquire “A songwriter who matters”  … Observer “A post-modern Randy Newman”  … The New York Sun “The Beck you’ve never heard of” …. LA Times “One of the country’s most idiosyncratic songwriters”
STOP PRESS!!!  Added to RRR Soundscape 24.08.07!!
