GRAVENHURST is the work of singer and guitarist NICK TALBOT, with contributions from other musicians at live shows, including drummer DAVID COLLINGWOOD and singer/instrumentalist PAUL NASH. ‘The Western Lands’ is their 4th album on WARP
In TALBOT’s words, musically, GRAVENHURST’s roots lie in MY BLOODY VALENTINE, SLINT, RICHARD THOMPSON and the VELVET UNDERGROUND. French music weekly LES INROCKUPTIBLES calls the album ”An atmospheric and melancholic rock masterpiece, full of inner but communicative violence”.
‘The Western Lands’ is a dream-world where an underpass is just as likely to be the scene of a romantic tryst as a dumping ground for dead bodies. It’s a place where random, inane chalk scrawlings on a wall might read like wise prophecies to the vulnerable and dispossessed. Seemingly random coincidences are everywhere, and the more you look for them the more you will find, and the more significance you attribute to them the more dangerous your thinking becomes. But like all good pop albums, there are love songs, revenge songs, and blind rage songs.
Gravenhurst have recently supported (by invitation) EXPLOSIONS IN THE SKY, BROADCAST, BELLE & SEBASTIAN, ANIMAL COLLECTIVE, GRIZZLY BEAR & SUFJAN STEVENS as well as their own slot at GLASTONBURY wowing crowds w’ their full-on, twin guitar sonic attack squad mode.
