A really electric set of grooves from the Heavy team of Casey Benjamin and Nicky Guiland -- stepping out here in a batch of tracks that bristle with a mix of elements borrowed from hip hop and 80s soul! There’s a nicely spare approach to the music here -- a really fresh style that’s unlike anything else we can think of -- and which is a tremendous achievement in a world of too-sequed contemporary soul.
Benjamin and Guiland are really striking out here strongly -- finding a bold new space in music, and reminding us that there’s still plenty of new territory to explore, when the right folks are at the helm! Many of the beats are nicely old school, and the vocals are often electrified a bit too -- further emphasizing the already playful rhythms inherent in the tunes.
