Arising from the damp earth in England’s dark and insular countryside, The Heavy are survivors of Bath’s poor outskirts; a place that normally buries ambition under six feet of dirt. Using their wits and embracing their inner wickedness, these boys throw their hometown’s tedium into a melting pot of disparate musical influences – ranging from Curtis Mayfield, and RZA to Led Zeppelin – and cook up a haunting breed of voodoo soul which is sexy, unsettling, and utterly original all at once.
The Heavy’s core members – Kelvin Swaby and Dan Taylor – have known each other for over a decade. The child of one of Bath’s first West Indian families and one of eleven siblings, lead vocalist, Swaby discovered his spirit in and amongst dark reggae recordings, grimy hip-hop, and of course, the flamboyant pop of Prince. Yet his musical destiny would not unfold until he met Dan Taylor, who shared with him a fervent appreciation of vintage rhythm and blues. Despite Swaby earning immense acclaim for earlier musical projects – most notably, taking on the role of lead vocalist on Bristol trip-hop duo, Alpha’s critically-lauded 2003 album, ‘Stargazing’ – Swaby and Taylor were undoubtedly at their most poisonous in collusion. Starting with only a four track and an insatiable desire to break free of monotony, the pair soon recruited Chris Ellul on drums and Spencer Page on bass, and began gigging as a four piece. Alpha’s Corin Dingley also joined the project, fortifying the group’s infectious jams with pulverising wall-of-sound production.
Blending dirty blues, spine-rattling soul and gritty acid rock, The Heavy are brutal in force and narcotic in influence. From the menacing glam-soul stomper that is "That Kind Of Man" to the hazy, jaded rock epic that is "You Don't Know", 'Great Vengeance and Furious Fire' will hunt you down and own you.
