Go Go Smear The Poison Ivy

Hailing from the freezing and volcanic terrain of Iceland, Múm’s music is as beautifully paradoxical as the landscape they inhabit – grand and glacial, while energetic and explosive. Blending experimental electronic hiccups, pillowy soft vocals and carnivalesque noise, this Scandanavian group’s fourth album, ’Go Go Smear The Poison Ivy’, is a twitching ball of life-affirming energy, not to mention their best to date.
Formed in 1997 as they worked on a children’s play, the original incarnation of Múm soon rose to prominence with their elfish and effervescent albums on iconic labels Morr Music and Fat Cat. With the departure of founding vocalist Kristín Vlatýsdóttir in 2006, however, Múm’s remaining members, Gunnar Örn Tynes and Örvar Þóreyjarson Smárason were presented with the invaluable opportunity of a new beginning.
Casting aside any preconceptions of where to take their sound, they cherry-picked a handful of established multi-instrumentalists to assist them in reimagining Múm’s musical boundaries. Among them was long-time Múm associate Samuli Kosminen, bewitching violinist Ólöf Arnalds, Sigur Rós and Benni Hemm Hemm affiliate Eiríkur Orri Ólafsson, film composer and Throbbing Gristle collaborator Hildur Guðnadóttir, and vocalist Sigurlaug Gísladóttir. Recording in numerous Icelandic settings – most notably a small fishing community, where a local schoolhouse and its various instruments became a point of inspiration – ‘Go Go Smear The Poison Ivy’ is the sound of Múm finding invigoration in renewal.
Warm, rich and gorgeously melodic, this is an album of experimental music that’s naturally, effortlessly imbued with pop sensibility.
