Controversy - A Tribute To
Rapster
SOUL/FUNK
ACADEMY AWARD & GRAMMY AWARD-winning artist PRINCE is an artist that needs very little introduction, he’s created music that has shaped & influence close to two decades of pop music and culture. Influencing the careers of many modern notables.
There is no denying it PRINCE’s an innovative & adventurous artist. His music has spanned several styles: from his early material, rooted in R&B, funk & soul, to new wave, pop, rock, blues, jazz & hip hop. It’s this diversity & willingness to experiment that has made him one of the most influential artists of all time.
RAPSTER RECORDS pays homage to the artist formally known as with the release of ‘Controversy: A Tribute To Prince’ features some interesting interpretations of some of his biggest hits, including “Purple Rain”, “Controversy”, “Girls & Boys” and “Alphabet Street”, by a host of major artists. These include soul legend D’ANGELO, new reggae sensations THE DYNAMICS and dance stars SOULWAX, OSUNLADE, electro queen PEACHES and ROB MELLO through to KODE 9 among others re-working the Prince classics.
Each artist has stepped up to the challenge, to creatively interpret the songs originally created by a musical genius, ea. track has been manipulated, deconstructed & reconstructed & to create new ‘songs’ as opposed to ‘covers’.
Reggae stars THE DYNAMICS treat “Girls & Boys” to a melodic laidback makeover while Swedish experimental pop star STINA NORDENSTAM turns “Purple Rain” into an ethereal beauty. SOULWAX’s version of “Starfish & Coffee” stands out by way of stripped back organs & beats + 7 HURTS & PEACHES’ take on “Sexy Dancer” is another colourful conversion featured here.
