ELECTRONIC
Electronic mavericks AUTECHRE stand out like supernovas amid one of music’s
customarily starless constellations. The Sheffield-via-Manchester duo of SEAN BOOTH and ROB BROWN are shrewd, sphinx-like and fiercely protective of their music and they nonetheless remain tantalizing, even awe-inspiring enigmas. ‘Quaristice’ is their 9th album, the duo’s first in 3 years.
Experimentation have made AUTECHRE one of the most distinctive and revered electronic groups of all time. They’ve previously been commissioned to remix the likes of STEREOLAB, TORTOISE and SURGEON and have notably been feted by THOM YORKE, with the RADIOHEAD front-man stating on his official message board that ‘Confield’ “made my head spin” and citing Booth and Brown’s work as an
influence on his own ‘Kid A’ and ‘Amnesiac’ (Autechre themselves admit indifference to this).
Initially based in and around Manchester, former graffiti/tag artists Booth and Brown, sharing a love of MANTRONIX, the BOMB SQUAD, ARTHUR BAKER and thrilled by the process of looping and cutting up sounds began constructing/trading pause-button mix tapes before working on their own compositions, with the simple aim to “make good stuff” and with the release of their ninth album ‘Quaristice’, Autechre contend that they are doing “The same thing, only now”.
Now, even after nine albums and an equal number of EPs later, Autechre’s Brown and Booth are full of fresh ideas, this is evident with the release of album number nine. ‘Quaristice’ although maintains the intelligent bleeps & squelches that the duo are highly celebrated for but it also possesses a fresh, full and warm feel that compliments the machine-like compositions. 12 tracks deep ‘Quaristice’ opens with the atmospheric textures of “Altibzz” followed by the calculated variations of “Anterior” which indicates the diverseness and depth of the album. Autechre’s ultra experimentalism has sidled sideways with the release of ‘Quaristice’ the duo give their audience a more contemplative piece of work that will undeniably mature with every listen. ‘Quaristice’ is a crucial release for Autechre, one that marks their experimental growth and showcases the duo’s unsettled progressive nature
