The basic template of ‘Stories From The Watercooler’ is classic folk-rock with great song-writing and Matthias’ (BERT JANSCH-esque) deadpan voice, but it also features a subtle electronic element beside the more traditional arrangements. All this is courtesy of COLDCUT who produced the album and release it on the NINJA offshoot label COUNTER (POP LEVI, DEATH SET). The artwork for ‘Stories’ is provided by STANLEY DONWOOD, best known for his record covers for THOM YORKE. Thom and John played in a band together during their student days and the latter added violin to ‘The Bends’.
Matthias went on to work with the maverick MATTHEW HERBERT and released his debut album, ‘Smalltown Shining’ on his ACCIDENTAL RECORDS. He also featured on Coldcut’s last album, ‘Sound Mirrors’, on “Man In A Garage” and has worked on film soundtracks such as ‘The Hamburg Cell’ (dir. Antonia Bird) with CORKER CONBOY. JOHN MATTHIAS shows that ‘folk’ can exist within almost any arrangement when the songwriting is this strong.
