MONKEY is the new project for Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlet (GORILLAZ). The album has just received an official TRIPLE J ALBUM ADD!
The Gorillaz album sold 250,000 copies in Australia, and now the same masterminds have mutated into ‘Monkey’ to bring you
‘Journey to the West’. Damon does the music and Jamie does the graphics, which were such a major part of the Gorillaz. The storyline is based on ancient Chinese texts. Many Australians will be familiar with the story as it formed the basis of the legendary TV series
MONKEY MAGIC.
The album was recorded in London and Beijing over the last twelve months and features European and Chinese musicians and singers. It draws upon the music Damon composed (and the visuals Jamie created) for the Chinese opera production of the same name.
As you can imagine, with Jamie Hewlett involved this is going to be a very visual project. The stage version,
“Monkey: Journey To The West” (
VIEW HERE) made its London debut at the
ROYAL OPERA HOUSE in July. There is also a strong chance of the opera coming to Australia.
The music and visuals will also be used by the BBC during their coverage of the BEIJING OLYMPICS:
