Kid Koala And Ex-wolfmother Crew Team Up For The Slew Australian Tour!

In one of the most exciting collaborations to grace the stage in years, Canadian turntable masters Kid Koala and Dynomite D team up with former Wolfmother crew Chris Ross and Myles Heskett to create a psych/heavy-rock-drenched project The Slew.

Kid Koala proudly presents The Slew Live featuring a hefty six turntables with Chris and Myles from Wolfmother on bass and drums. Hitting up major capital cities across Australia in May, it’s rock turntablism like you’ve never seen it before.

Teaming up with Chris Ross and Myles Heskett – the former rhythm section of Grammy Award-winning band Wolfmother – The Slew set out to put together a full-blown rock band experience to do justice to the material in a live setting. And justice was served: The truly excessive six turntables, drum, bass, keyboard and wall of amps that made their way across North America this October made for a full-on raw, pummeling rock experience. The Slew bring attitude back to the turntable unlike anything you’ve ever heard.

First Amp Shortlist Artist Announced

Since it launched in 2006, people have been saying that the AMP is a better indicator of industry talent than the ARIAs, which tend to focus on the success of an act. If that's the case, then Urthboy has a whole lot of gloating to do - he's the first artist announced for this year's shortlist with their eyes on the prize.

But you'll have to wait until the announcement on February 14th for the other 8 contenders - who will no doubt be wondering about their chances as Urthboy takes the stage to perform for the announcement event.

Mulatu Astatke Set To Release First New Artist Album In 20 Years!

Following his acclaimed collaboration on Strut with The Heliocentrics, the Father of Ethio jazz presents his brand new studio album, ‘Mulatu Steps Ahead’ for 2010. The album explores new directions in fusions of Western jazz with Ethiopian modes, moving forward the pioneering sound Mulatu developed during the ‘60s and ‘70s, showcased on the recent Strut compilation ‘New York * Addis * London’. For the new album, tracks were recorded with members of Either/Orchestra in Boston, with contributions by traditional Ethiopian musicians in Addis, members of The Heliocentrics and some of the UK’s leading jazz and African players during the final sessions in London in November 2009.

Each track on the album tells its own story. The reflective, meandering opener, Radcliffe, was composed specifically for the Radcliffe Institute during Mulatu’s time lecturing at Harvard in Boston – the original score is now framed on the wall there. The Way To Nice was written and arranged on the tour bus during Mulatu’s recent French dates – “with this track, you are travelling on a long journey, talking and thinking” explains Mulatu. “It was inspired by the many beautiful places on the coast road around Nice.”

Mulatu has been nominated for the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Gilles Peterson Awards in London on the 6th of February, and the album "Inspiration Information 3" (Mulatu and The Heliocentrics) has been nominated for Best Album of 2009.

Phil Howells Joins !k7 Records A&r Department

Phil Howells will be taking over from Juan Vandervoort as Head Of A&R for !K7 Records, Horst Weidenmüller, CEO of !K7 Records announced today.

“We are all really excited about Phil bringing his seasoned A&R experience and extensive network of artist and label relationships to !K7," stated Horst.

Phil Howells commented: “For me, happiness is working at an independent company making cool, electronic records so this role at !K7 could not be more perfect. !K7 has a great heritage and a fantastic infrastructure that’s going to make my life as their A&R relatively easy. I also think that !K7 is so flexible in the relationships that we can build with partners, whether those are bands, DJs, producers, labels or managers, that we will be uniquely placed to grow and thrive over the next few years.”

Former London Records / FFRR A&R Phil Howells has always been at the forefront of the electronic music scene. Following his departure from London Records, Howells started his own label City Rockers in 2001, which pretty much signposted the noughties UK dance scene, to release dance acts and guitar bands which included Felix Da Housecat, FC Kahuna, Tiga, The Rakes, The Duke Spirit and The Sunshine Underground.

Bridezilla Tour With Mess Hall, Decemberists And The Cribs!

Having just played shows at Homebake and with The Temper Trap, Sydney’s Bridezilla are set to play a series of dates across the country, including performances with The Decemberists, John Cale, Dirty Three, The Cribs, and The Mess Hall!

The dates follow a magnificent year for Bridezilla, which saw the group’s debut album ‘The First Dance’ recognised in Best Of 2009 lists by publications including MAG, Rolling Stone and Mess & Noise. Bridezilla were also voted by Australian music bloggers, via A Reminder’s annual survey, as the #2 Australian/New Zealand Band Of 2009 – beating out the likes of The Drones, The Middle East and Eddy Current Suppression Ring!
