Mr Savona Warns The Nation This Coming 19th March!!

Melbourne's Mista Savona returns with a blistering new dancehall and reggae record titled Warn the Nation, featuring Capleton, Sizzla, Horance Andy, Prince Alla and many more.

It's an incredible collaboration between Australian musicians and Jamaican vocalists produced by Mista Savona, who jumped on a place and built on the reltionships forged during Melbourne Meets Kingston - his highly acclaimed album from 2006.

Warn the Nation
is a big step forward, this time enlisting some of the biggest reggae stars to Savona's cause - creating arguably the most accomplished reggae album to come out of Autralia. Musically the arrangements are stunnning; the players are first rate; and vocally it's out of this world - with adn overarching theme addressing the urgency of global sustainability and the environment.

Head For The Hills... With The Return Of Mikelangelo And The Black Sea Gentlemen

Making their much anticipated return to the Australian festival circuit for the first time since their five star sweep of Edinburgh Festival and sold out shows in London’s Soho are your much beloved balladeers Mikelangelo and the Black Sea Gentlemen

It is true gentle fellows and forceful ladies! - Your stars Mikelangelo, Rufino, the Great Muldavio, Little Ivan and Guido Libido will be saddling up the donkeys and heading for The Blue Mountains Music Festival this March 12-14. This information is sure to send you into a feverish spin, but once you have regained your bearings please find all the trifling specifics of ticket purchase and performance times at http://www.bmff.org.au

But for those who prefer not to leave the urban enclaves of Old Sydney Town fear not – a mere sheltered carriage ride from Razorhurst is the gentrified light-industrial labyrinth of Marrickville, whereupon Mikelangelo and the exceptional gentlemen will be performing a very special semi-secret set Sunday March 14 at that elusive and alluring ‘happening place’ named Qirkz.  shshhh!  (find out more by joining the mailing list info@qirkz.com).

Mikelangelo and the Black Sea Gentlemen’s latest album Dead Men Tell a Thousand Tales is available in many excellent record barns and also through the technological marvel that is the boffins internet, at www.inertia-music.com or online at the Mikelangelo and the Black Sea Gentlemen - Dead Men Tell a Thousand Tales store.

JOHN SHAND (SMH) **** "Mikelangelo and the Black Sea Gentlemen... seduce the listener with affecting moments of sadness or beauty."

Micah P. Hinson Releases Covers Album

Texan alt-country, troubadour Micah P. Hinson will return this 12th March with an all new, double-album, ‘All Dressed Up And Smelling Of Strangers’ on Pod (Frightened Rabbit, Girls). Split over two CDs, the album will consist entirely of covers.

The first volume will feature what Micah describes as “quieter, calmer songs” from the likes of Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, John Denver and Frank Sinatra. The second volume is “louder and loaded with many more instruments”, and features renditions of Elvis, Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly, The Beatles, Leadbelly and Patsy Cline! The treatment in each case is not reverential, but loving, and unique to Micah and his distinct Texan burr.

With a gritty, country-noir style reminiscent of Bonnie “Prince” Billy and Jason Molina, ‘All Dressed Up And Smelling Of Strangers’ is simply unforgettable. Boasting reinterpreted classics and contemporary favourites, these are the songs which have seen Micah P. Hinson through the hard times, and the good ones.

Kid Koala And Ex-wolfmother Crew Team Up For The Slew Australian Tour!

In one of the most exciting collaborations to grace the stage in years, Canadian turntable masters Kid Koala and Dynomite D team up with former Wolfmother crew Chris Ross and Myles Heskett to create a psych/heavy-rock-drenched project The Slew.

Kid Koala proudly presents The Slew Live featuring a hefty six turntables with Chris and Myles from Wolfmother on bass and drums. Hitting up major capital cities across Australia in May, it’s rock turntablism like you’ve never seen it before.

Teaming up with Chris Ross and Myles Heskett – the former rhythm section of Grammy Award-winning band Wolfmother – The Slew set out to put together a full-blown rock band experience to do justice to the material in a live setting. And justice was served: The truly excessive six turntables, drum, bass, keyboard and wall of amps that made their way across North America this October made for a full-on raw, pummeling rock experience. The Slew bring attitude back to the turntable unlike anything you’ve ever heard.

First Amp Shortlist Artist Announced

Since it launched in 2006, people have been saying that the AMP is a better indicator of industry talent than the ARIAs, which tend to focus on the success of an act. If that's the case, then Urthboy has a whole lot of gloating to do - he's the first artist announced for this year's shortlist with their eyes on the prize.

But you'll have to wait until the announcement on February 14th for the other 8 contenders - who will no doubt be wondering about their chances as Urthboy takes the stage to perform for the announcement event.

Mulatu Astatke Set To Release First New Artist Album In 20 Years!

Following his acclaimed collaboration on Strut with The Heliocentrics, the Father of Ethio jazz presents his brand new studio album, ‘Mulatu Steps Ahead’ for 2010. The album explores new directions in fusions of Western jazz with Ethiopian modes, moving forward the pioneering sound Mulatu developed during the ‘60s and ‘70s, showcased on the recent Strut compilation ‘New York * Addis * London’. For the new album, tracks were recorded with members of Either/Orchestra in Boston, with contributions by traditional Ethiopian musicians in Addis, members of The Heliocentrics and some of the UK’s leading jazz and African players during the final sessions in London in November 2009.

Each track on the album tells its own story. The reflective, meandering opener, Radcliffe, was composed specifically for the Radcliffe Institute during Mulatu’s time lecturing at Harvard in Boston – the original score is now framed on the wall there. The Way To Nice was written and arranged on the tour bus during Mulatu’s recent French dates – “with this track, you are travelling on a long journey, talking and thinking” explains Mulatu. “It was inspired by the many beautiful places on the coast road around Nice.”

Mulatu has been nominated for the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Gilles Peterson Awards in London on the 6th of February, and the album "Inspiration Information 3" (Mulatu and The Heliocentrics) has been nominated for Best Album of 2009.

The Soft Pack Cover Phoenix's Fences - Great Fan Video!

It’s not that often that we get to use the words ‘great’ and ‘fan videos’ in the same sentence but hey let’s make the most of the opportunity!
During 2009, The Soft Pack have done several cool cover versions including one of Spacemen 3’s ‘Walking With Jesus’ and The Cure’s ‘Grinding Halt’.
The most noticeable however has probably been their version of US touring partner Phoenix’s track ‘Fences’.

Check out this fan video for the track which uses excerpts from various Andy Warhol films. It includes Lou Reed, Nico and lots of shots of Edie Sedgwick and really connects the track with a period it could have come from.

Lamb Vocalist Lou Rhodes Announces Return With Free Download

Mercury nominated British singer songwriter Lou Rhodes returns with her third solo album 'One Good Thing', released in  March 2010 through Motion Audio, a new Ninja Tune subsidiary label run by The Cinematic Orchestra.

'One Good Thing' brilliantly and beautifully reflects the very natural talent of one of Britain’s most accomplished and unconventional singer songwriters. Recorded in just two weeks in live takes with minimal editing and overdubs the result is a record of disarming honesty.

"Most of the music I'm inspired by was either recorded years ago or uses similar old-school analogue techniques", say Rhodes. "I guess if I had a reference point for the recording of this record it'd be stuff like Nick Drake's 'Five Leaves Left' or Nico's 'Chelsea Girl'. Basically guitar and voice recorded together as it's played with the sound of a room rather than a deadened vocal booth. Then the addition of beautiful, simple strings and the odd frame drum..."

Rhodes will be in Australia over summer for some very special shows with her beloved original act, Lamb.
